Reselfridges

Selfridges commissioned Sibley Grove to design Reselfridges, a bespoke accessories destination showcasing a curated selection of pre-loved accessories, across its London, Birmingham and Manchester stores. Using Sibley Grove’s Design for Disassembly approach, the goal was to create store fixtures and display elements that could be easily disassembled, repaired, reused, refurbished or recycled — reducing environmental impact while creating an exciting, impactful and unique retail space.

The design strategy was to keep within the vernacular of the store, creating a clean, contemporary and elegant space that allowed the products themselves to shine. Every fixture and fitting required design thinking and technical knowledge to create a luxury aesthetic that could easily be repaired, refurbished, reused or recycled at the end of its current use.

Pre-loved retail presents a fundamentally different merchandising challenge to conventional retail. In a standard concession, an item that sells is replaced with an identical one — the fixture system never needs to change. In pre-loved retail, no two items are ever the same: stock is unique, unrepeatable, and constantly turning over in shape, size and volume. Sibley Grove designed the fixture system specifically to solve this problem, with modular components that could be reconfigured, refreshed with new panels and colourways, and adapted on an ongoing basis to maximise the retail experience around whatever stock was in-store at any given time. A repair element was also built into the concession itself, reinforcing the circularity of the concept from merchandising through to aftercare.

Mechanical fixings were used throughout to allow display components to be disassembled into component parts, and displays were designed modularly so Selfridges could reuse elements in other stores and other display contexts. Many fixtures were designed within a 0.5-millimetre tolerance, adding the feeling of excellent craftsmanship synonymous with luxury design — ensuring the fixtures are built to the highest quality and will stand the test of time and the rigours of the world’s most prominent department store.

Scope of Appointment

Sibley Grove designed the concession and fixture system across three Selfridges stores (London, Birmingham, Manchester), including a repair element within the concession.
