Georgian Townhouse, Totnes, Devon

A Grade II listed Georgian townhouse in Totnes, Devon, renovated within its existing proportions to protect the relationship between the kitchen, scullery and walled garden beyond. Retaining and enhancing historic detail throughout while bringing the house fully up to the demands of modern family life.

This Grade II listed Georgian townhouse in Totnes, South Devon, underwent a wider renovation in 2020. Sibley Grove’s role focused on planning and the detailed design of the kitchen, scullery and bathrooms, working carefully within the constraints and character of the historic building.

Our approach began with the existing Georgian fabric. Rather than introducing unnecessary change, the proposals worked with the established proportions, layout and historic character of the house, balancing the requirements of a contemporary family home with the sensitivities of a listed building.

The kitchen and scullery sit around the property’s walled garden, making the relationship between inside and outside central to the design. Layouts were developed to protect important views and sightlines while resolving the practical requirements of storage, preparation and everyday family life. The result is generous storage and functionality without compromising the openness of the rooms or their connection with the garden.

In the bathrooms, the emphasis was similarly practical and considered. Existing service routes were used wherever possible, limiting intervention into the historic fabric, while carefully planned layouts created spaces that feel open, comfortable and generous.

Across the project, our focus was on making thoughtful interventions where they were needed while respecting what was already there. The result demonstrates Sibley Grove’s approach to heritage residential design: combining planning expertise with detailed kitchen, bathroom and interior design to help historic buildings work successfully for contemporary life.
