Designing Smarter: Storage Tips for Hotel Bedrooms

We spend a lot of Studio time designing hotel bedrooms and whether they are spacious luxury penthouse suites, or bijou boutique guest rooms, well thought-out storage is vital to smooth and easeful guest experience. Effective storage doesn’t just create more space; it involves creating the right kind of space, tailored to real guest behaviour. When it comes to storage, our goal is to design hotel bedrooms that are both functional and intuitive. Here are a few useful tips to consider:

Firstly, consider the type of stay…

Not every guest stays for a week. For short visits, such as business trips or city breaks, do guests really need a full wardrobe? Often, a well-placed luggage rack and a few sturdy hooks in the right place will suffice. Many hotels will have a typical length of guest stay, so design with intention and ensure the storage fits how long guests are likely to stay.

Make adequate room for luggage…

While guests may unpack, their luggage still needs a designated spot. Without proper storage, suitcases can block walkways or end up shoved under tables. In smaller rooms, under-bed storage is an excellent solution to keep things organised, uncluttered and out of sight. In larger rooms, a built-in luggage bench or trunk at the foot of the bed adds both storage and style.

Plan for cushions and throws…

Bed cushions and throws create a welcoming environment, but they often end up on the floor once guests settle in. Consider adding a designated storage spot for these items, such as inside a wardrobe or on a low shelf. Alternatively, design them to double as functional cushions for nearby chairs.

Chose open shelving rather than endless draws…

Drawers and cupboards are useful, but too many can overwhelm a space and often go unused. Open shelving, on the other hand, is practical and helps guests see everything at a glance. This is especially helpful during checkout when guests are trying to remember their belongings.

Consider bathroom storage needs…

Ensure that vanity units are spacious enough to accommodate guests’ washbags and toiletries. While drawers and cupboards are helpful, many guests prefer to keep their essentials, like face creams and make-up, visible and accessible. A clear, clutter-free surface goes a long way in enhancing the bathroom experience.

Accessibility and cleanliness are important considerations…

Smart storage also supports accessibility, safety and cleanliness. Keep floor space clear to aid mobility. Avoid placing storage where it may be a tripping hazard or difficult to reach. And choose materials that are easy to clean and maintain, especially in high-touch areas. It’s often the very practical elements of interior design that elevate a guest experience. Whilst beautiful soft furnishings and comfortable mattress are important, it’s the smaller and well thought-through details that tend to make a hotel more memorable.
